Hi,
After a couple of accidental power failures my PC has developed a problem. It now takes 4 mins to boot, it just gets stuck on the windows loading screen(scrolling blue line) with very little disc activity. After around 4 mins it finally boots and everything seems to be working normally. Ive tried system restore and “restarting the pc to the last known config that worked” Same problem. If I start the PC in safe mode it doesn’t delay. This makes me think that some sort of driver has been corrupted. Is this correct? Is there any way I can find out what is causing the problem so I can reinstall the offending item? As a last resort I was about to try the option on the Windows XP disc that allows windows to be repaired. But I’d rather find the culprit. And God forbid, a full reinstall of windows and ALL my programs…..NOOooo!! Thanks Novac. |

Easiest fix is to do the repair option with an XP CD.

I tried your suggestion but ran into a problem. My version is a 1st edition of XP and I'm now using SP2. When I tried to install I got this message. Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered. If I press on details I get this. Windows Setup Microsoft -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Issue Description: To install the version on the CD, restart your computer, boot from this CD, and follow the instructions for a new installation. Warning: The default setup options will replace your existing version of Windows with this version. If you wish to keep both versions you must select a new destination folder for this version of Windows. If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered. Is there any way of just doing a repair? Thanks for your help. Alan. |

No then, you will need a matching CD to what you have on the PC.
If you can get the PC to boot go into My Computer, right click the drive and select > properties > tools > error checking. Make sure 'Automatically fix file systems errors' is checked. It will ask for a reboot, do so and let the drive be scanned/fixed. |

Tried that still the same!! Looks like a full reinstall with everything that goes with it is looking depressingly like the only option???? Thanks for the help. Alan. |
