Hi,

I have built my own PC that I've had for about 10years now and recently upgraded the RAM, CPU fan, hard drives (original 20GB hard drive is used for OS) and PSU. Every 3 or so times when I start the PC there is an automatic reboot prior to Windows loading or once Windows has loaded I get the 'Windows recovered from a serious error' message. I also got a STOP error once which mentioned a driver: tmcomm.sys which I believe is Trend Micro which I've since deleted as I don't use that software but the problem persists.

I then tried to repair windows by booting from the Windows CD but each time I seem to get a different error.

1st time: usbstor.sys is corrupt
2nd: usbccgp.sys is corrupt
3rd: FILE \i386\vgaoem.fon could not be loaded. The error code is 7

Then I ran CHKDSK /R using the Recovery Console and then tried to boot from the Windows CD but the errors kept coming!

4th time: INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 8192
5th time: vga.sys is corrupted

I've tried to view the minidump file via WinDbg but it says the file is corrupt!

I don't have a problem when the PC is actually running but there is clearly a problem that needs sorting.

I am running XP SP3 and I regularly check for malware / viruses.

Please help.

Cheers.

At what stage do these errors pop up? Could be a dodgy CD or CD drive...

The USB errors come up when the USB files are being loaded. The other 'file' errors come up at the beginning of the windows CD loading and the vga error comes up when the video files are loading.

Sounds like a dodgy CD, try it in another machine maybe.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

CD is ok as I tried in my laptop - no error messages when booting from CD. CD drive is fairly new and not used that much. I'll try to see if there are any driver updates

If you get the errors prior to reaching the part where it copies files to the hard drive and the CD works in another machine I would say it is an issue with the drive itself. CD roms don't uses drivers per-say and during the install process the build in windows drivers are used so there is not much that can be done except try a new drive.

Could it be a fault with my hard drive if the DVD drive is ok?

Obviously these things are difficult to diagnose over the net, but I would say the drive is looking suspect.

It could be but that would show up when you get to the part when you partition the drive then copy files to it, after the loading of the CD into memory. The hard drive isnt even looked at when the initial loading of the CD is being done.
