A professor of mine said something the other day in class that sparked my interest, but i want to make sure it is legal before I get excited.

He said that its not the windows cd you are paying for its the product key. What i got out of his is...as long as you use your product key you can install with another copy of the os.

The reason this sparked my attention is because i purchased an hp laptop in 2006 running windows xp home and it came with no install cd's. Just a recovery console that i accidentally deleted trying to partition my hard drive. lol

well i guess i went off on a tangent there but back to my question...is it legal?

Not true, yes you are essentially just paying for the key, but the license that goes with it says you can only use it on one machine.

Also keys need activating so they can tell if you put it on another machine.

Either way discussion about circumventing any software is not allowed here.
