Default RAM quantity: Vista vs XP

I currently have 2gb of RAM in Windows XP, and am pretty satisfied with it, I feel it is plenty.

I am thinking about upgrading to Vista (I have a legit copy collecting dust). I also have an extra gb of RAM that I can put in my system.

If I upgrade to Vista,
and put my additional gb of RAM in, will I be satisfied with 3gb of RAM in Vista just as I was with 2gb in XP?

In XP, I make good use of both my X2 cores, I do a lot of multitasking, a lot of DVD encoding, and gaming. I don't usually run into a RAM shortage, there always seems to be enough to run all the apps I want at any given time.

I am worried that what might be a plentiful amount of RAM in XP will be a mediocre amount in Vista.

Any insight?

I run 2GB and Vista runs fine, no different to XP in speed.

If it is a dog you can turn of all the extra features of Vista anyway.

Actually, Vista uses more RAM as it has more background services and proccesses to look better and the such; Really a waste.

On my computer I use 3GB DDR2 RAM by GBMICRO AKA KINGSTON. I reccomend 3GB's all the way, it'll keep you from running short!!

From what I know - Vista uses most of its ram for superfetch

Vista uses a feature called superfetch, which uses ram as a cache and preloads programs that you run often, making them faster at starting up. The more ram you have then the more vista will take advantage of utilising it as its cache rather that using it as free memory. It is not uncommon for vista machines to see most of the memory taken up. I have 2gb in my machine with only 640mb free, if I had 3Gb of ram the total free memory would probably be around the same! Strange affair!
