Default re-installed windows, data there but cant get it

Hi all

just bought some new components to upgrade my old system and used my old SATA 80GB hard drive with windows already on and also my emails and some other programs, office, nero etc, I also use 2 ATA 500GB drives for my data, pictures, music etc.when i turned my new system on it booted up fine but before windows started up it said NTDLR is missing press ctrl, alt, del to restart. I thought I could put my windows disk in and re-install this file so i did and restarted my pc. It took me into the install windows file and I chose to re-install over the original copy as I didnt have an option to fix!! It installed fine and works a treat but I can't get to my files from the original install, I can see them in the C drive but cant access them, also my emails need to be retreived if possible. Any help, advice etc. on this matter would be greatly appreciated as i have some important emails and data on the drive. Oh ye forgot to mention, I asked a "computer friend" who advised of the reinstall and advised that the data would all be there and it would just be the windows files it re-installs, I have spoken to him about it and he doesnt seem to have a clue now, mates in the know hey!!!

Anyway happy new year to you all and I hope someone out there can help!

It is likely that you need Admin permissions to access these files. This thread ( http://www.thecomputerforums.co.uk/f...l-sudden-9897/ ) has info using ‘cacls’ in the command prompt window to give full permissions to your login user name. Start small – pick an expendable file / directory. After gaining confidence, apply it to the whole drive (assumes drive other than the c: drive or other boot drive).

if not the data may be corrupt and unreadable there is software to retrive it.
if its email files they need to be opened through outlook as email are stored in outlooks specific file extension
what happens when you double click a file?

I'm pretty sure you can just boot into safe mode, login as admin and alter the access rights.
Just right click the denied folder and set to allow everyone to look at contents.

I expect that you need to take ownership of the folders.

Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.

If you are using XP Pro then you need to turn off Simple File Sharing.

1.Click Start, and then click My Computer.

2.On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.

3.In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.

4.Click OK.

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:

1.Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.

2.Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).

3.Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

4.In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on sub containers and objects check box.

5.Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.

6.Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.
