After downloading the recommended driver downloads from the Gateway website for my Gateway laptop , I have been noticing intermittently that when restarting the computer, the blue screen would appear stating that I have a corrupt driver installed and that I would need to reinstall it. I believe the driver or drivers in question have something to do with the graphics processor . I just chatted with Gateway technical support and they told me that the only way to fix or repair corrupt Windows XP drivers would be to reinstall Windows XP I was really hoping for an easier way to fix any corrupt drivers without having to reinstall the entire Windows XP operating system. Other than the blue screen appearing intermittently, the computer works fine. There are no noticeable performance issues when operating the computer. Therefore, I really do not see the need to reinstall the Windows XP operating system. Does anyone know of a simple and easy way to detect and repair corrupt drivers on the Windows XP operating systemsvwithout needing to reinstall it ? Thank you .

Do you have the windows XP setup/ installation CD? if so you could try to repair Windows using it.

You may be able to use that to repair the OS. After backing up all important data I would insert the disk while in the OS and see if it offers an option to repair windows. You could try it by booting from the CD as well. Just don't go for a complete recovery, only a repair, if possible. Doesn't the Gateway disk have all your drivers on it? I'm curious why you did this in the first place though?? "After downloading the recommended driver downloads from the Gateway website for my Gateway laptop "

I will give that a shot. Thanks. The drivers are contained on the CD. The only reason why I downloaded drivers was because Gateway via their online chat, stated that according to the model/ID number of my computer, it required driver updates. That is why I downloaded those drivers. It would be nice if Gateway offered a software to scan computers for required updates. They do have one on their website but they told me that it is not for computers like mine.

Well if the computer was having no problems it did not need updated drivers. Generally, the only time I know of people requiring updated drivers is if the device is not functioning properly or there's some security issue. If the above is correct and the device was operating fine before updating the driver I'd suggest going into device manager and rolling back the driver. If you're unsure of which device is causing the problem you may try rolling them all back one at a time until the problem is resolved. You can create a restore point between each attempt incase problems arise from that. You may also try going to a restore point that was prior to the initial Gateway driver updates. Also, you typically don't need to reinstall Windows because a driver is giving you difficulty. You simply re-install or roll back the given driver. Gateway should have all the XP drivers for your specific system. If you have installed new non OEM components you can get those drivers off the cd that came with that specific device or from that manufacturer's website.

I apologize, but the above post may be a little confusing so, I'd suggest now that you go to a restore point prior to the Gateway updates. Simply because I have no idea what they updated. Then if the problem isn't resolved, I'd suggest rolling back the updated drivers one by one. If this is a driver issue it should then be resolved. If not then I'd suggest reinstalling the drivers from the cd. Finally, if that doesn't work it may not be a driver issue and you may need to repair or reinstall Windows. I hope this helps. It's basically a process of elimination starting with the easiest and working toward the most difficult. :)
