I am hoping to roll back from Vista to XP - I know this topic has been done to death so apologies

Basically, I am aware that XP doesn't recognise SATA drives and my notebook has a SATA drive. I have managed to download the controller driver from http=http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=20974&dscr=Windows%20XP%20and%20Vista%20(32-bit%20or%2064-bit)%20SATA/Mass%20Storage%20Controller%20version:%20Intel%206.2.0.2002&uid=180855454

Now, is it possible to copy all files from my original XP installation disc onto my computer, then copy these files onto a new disc along with the contents of the above Sata controller driver and then, when installing XP, pushing F6 and locating the respective files from the CD?

I'm fairly sure when you press F6 you can remove the XP CD and then use the driver CD, putting the XP back when prompted.

Another thing to add is not all computers have this issue, newer machines should be fine.

I put XP pro on a new SATA hard drive in a Dell machine just today and needed no drivers, the SATA was auto detected.

If you use nlite (freeware) from here : http://www.nliteos.com/index.html you cancreate a new XP Installation disk, from your original, with integrated drivers.

I've used this on several PCs and Laptops and it does the job well .... no need to hit F6 or have seperate drivers disk.

Adding drives to XP isn't the issue, it's only when Installing XP from scratch.

OK, so I tried this today just using XP disc and HDD was not recognised. So, restarted installation and pushed F6. It only gave me the option to install controller drivers from a floppy and not from a CD....... I'll try Nlite and see how I get on ;)

So I used Nlite to make an edited version of XP so that it contained the SATA controller drivers for my laptop (which I had downloaded). It goes through the installation process and passed the F6 stage and seems to install the controller drivers. Nonetheless, it then "blue screens" at this stage (just before you select partion etc...), saying "PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED"

Any suggestions? FYI, my notebook is a Gateway, model MT6832b http://support.gateway.com/s//Mobile...14195Rnv.shtml

When you used nlite to integrate the drivers, did you include the correct files from the F6 Floppy x86 or F6 Floppy x64 folders, as per Gateway's F6 Floppy Install installation instructions ?

If you simply included the setup.exe file, this will not work.
