Default Running a Virtural Machine Player Anywhere?

I figured virtual machine can run on any computer since its just a file, but I wondered if I can run the player without installing it making it portable is that passable? I thought of using portable apps but I don't know where to start. I use Virtual Box but ...

Please don't mention Live CD unless it in some way it can help me with this task.

Can you not just install Virtual Box and whatever OS on a flash drive or EHDD?

Default Running a Virtural Machine Player Anywhere?

I was asking that is it possable because I don't know if it installs in just the 'program files' when installed or does it also install in other parts of the computer like /system32 and such? I am trying to do this because the host computer I'll be using will be will prevent installation of anything but I am allowed to run things from flash drive.

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't use system32 or anything, as it'd defeat the point a bit...

Don't hold me to that though, surely you don't really hav anything to lose by just trying it out though?
