Hi there. First off, I need to say that I'm a complete dunce when it comes to computers, so I apologise if this is in the wrong place etc.
A few days ago I had a 'Dr Watson' message thing pop up, internet explorer closed and my screen went all blue and stripey. Now, when I try to turn it on, I just get a black screen most of the time.
Somtimes though, the usual start up screen thing comes up (the bit where u can press f8, f2) followed by recovery program, but this just gives me the option of competely wiping it.
I was told to run it in safe mode to try to run a virus scan etc and could maybe save some of my documents etc, but I can't seem to find an option for safe mode.
I've tried pressing f8 on the start up bit (as I've read this is what I should do) but don't get any safe mode type options...
I don't know what to do, and was hoping that I could get some info... thanks
Deebee

Welcome to CJ

If you think it may be malware then don't force safe mode by any other method then f8. If it isn't working then there are other methods but again if it is malware you should not try them. You may be left in a boot loop which is unrecoverable. Do this instead. Please go to this post and follow the steps there. Post the logs in the virus spyware and security forum and I will have a look to see what needs to be done next.

Sometimes if you press and hold down F8 at boot, this will result in the system detecting a stuck key, so try tapping F8 instead, if this happens.

A bit more detail for each OS here .... I assume you are running XP

Hi- Thanks for ur reply. The problem is, my computer won't turn on properly- sometimes it doesn't go on at all and when it does go on, it just takes me to a recovery program screen... Otherwise i would have tried to scan already.... when I hit the f8 button it takes me to a boot manager thing- no safe mode option... again, sorry if I'm being stupid here but I really don't have a clue!

What is the make/model of the PC ? .... it sounds like a manufacturers recovery sequence is being accessed by F8.

Have you got an XP Installation disk ? (assuming XP)
