Hi all After trying to install a piece of software I found that when I rebooted the comp I got the error message "Missing NTLDR". After reading lots of forums I feel I have one of possably three problems. Either the NTLDR really is missing from the root directory or the drive is giving problems or the motherboard is not recognising the drive. My gut feeling is the NTLDR is missing. I have tried using the Windows XP Pro repair by booting from the install disk, Seagates Seatools and UBCD with no luck. After more investigation I found while booting from the XP disk I needed to press the F6 key at the apropriate time to load raid drivers. Once I did this I found I could see the drive. My problem now is I cant copy the required files from the CD to the root directory of the hard drive. I keep coming up against an "Access is Denied" message. After some trial and error tests I found I can only copy to the windows directory of the same drive. My system is an ASUS Motherboard with an AMI Bios, 2Gb Pentium 4 and 512Mb Ram. The drive is a 80Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Can anyone help? **Addtional info: I have often had that message (or a similar one) before when doing a reboot but found the problem was with the bios somehow changing the boot order. Naturaly this was the first thing I tried. The bios still recognises the drive and the boot order is correct.

If updating BIOS doesn't work try the following before resorting to reinstall If the computer you are on now has the same OS go to C:\i386\ntldr and C:\i386\ntdetect.com copy those files to disk. Use a bootable disk to restart the computer (Try Win 98 bootable CD) you can download from here to make a bootable 98 disk http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnlddisk.htm. After entering MS DOS mode, copy those 2 files to the C drive in the proper location. After restart, you should be able to start the repair of Windows through system recovery. (F6 for you) This will reinstall all Windows drivers and system files, while preserving all data.

Thanks for all the offers of help. I finally fixed the problem but not sure if I did anything different from previous attempts. I resolved it by booting from the XP install disk again. Pressing F6 key at the appropriate time and selecting R when given the option. This is what I had tried before but this time it alowed me to copy files to the root directory for the operating system. Thanks again for the offers of help. Oh by the way.....I have thought of updating the bios but cant justify the cost. Ami want to charge me for update. Never had that before with other bios updates. Is this normal now? Last edited by Gradev : 31-12-2007 at 08:50 AM.
