Hey, I am having a multitude of problems with installing things, updating software, and even uninstalling things. Its seems to be a computer wide problem. For example, new updates that are available from windows continually fails to successfully update. Even programs that I have tried to uninstall won't uninstall. Could it possibly have something to do with a installation registry key or something like that? This has been happening for about two weeks now, and I would have noticed it earlier but its not every day that I'm installing new software or something of the sort. I have no idea how to fix this problem, and its not exactly crippling my computer but I cannot go on forever with updating virus protection, windows updates, etc. Thank you so very much for all your help!!!!! - Nick [ P.S. I don't suspect that this is due to a virus or something like that so I didn't make this post in the virus subsection, I hope general forums is okay for now. ]

Might be worth giving autopatcher a go to see if you can get Windows Updates installed and see if they fix the problem.

Hey, Just an update: 1.No, I am not running Vista. I'm running Media Center. 2. I just tried restoring my computer to Aug. 10 and it failed to restore, saying that no changes were made to the computer. Do you think that I should try a different date? Thanks so much for all your help and input. If there's any other ideas out there that can help get this fixed i would greatly appreciate it!

You could try a different date. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Have you tried my autopatcher suggestion?

Carbon - Tried that, didn't work. I guess the SP version I'm running is newer than that so there isn't any need to install (or try to ) that update.mbonwick- I sucessfully restored my computer to 8/20, but I'm still expierencing the same issues so I'm not sure if it really had any effect. For example, Windows Updater tried running and these updates consistently fail... Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 Security Update for Microsoft Office Web Components (KB947319) Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB972688) I haven't tried the autopatcher suggestion yet, but I plan to. How exactly does it work. Update - I know this may sound ridiculous but I tried installing Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 onto my computer on 8/13. I kept getting an error message called "Error 1500" when I tried to install it. Soo I went to Adobe's website and tried to find support for an Error 1500 but couldn't find an article linking Error 1500 and PE7. Anyways, I think this key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Installer\Inprogress" was deleted in the process. Could this be the source of all the problems? Can I even do anything about it? Again, thanks for all the help mates. :)

Try scanning your System files : Click Start/Run and type sfc /scannow and click OK you may be asked for the Windows CD. This will repair the Windows system files (dll’s, drivers, services, etc.), so once the processing is complete, any problems related to Windows XP system files should be fixed.

Hey Philthomas, I just finished scanning the system files, and some did come up as unrecognized versions which it wanted to restore. It wanted me to put it the Windows XP Pro. Service Pack 3 Cd and also the Windows XP Pro CD 2. Here's the catch, I scoured my house for those disks, and I came up with one XP Pro CD, which the scanner said was the wrong disk. Is there any way I can get around that, possibly some sort of download from Windows themselves? Thanks for the help man, if I can do this, I think this will fix it!
