Default Should I format hardrive and re-install windows?

Hi,

Had a bad few days with my pc. It started with random crashes and boot up problems. I first did a virus scan and cleaned out with c clean. No good. So I took the back off and found that the power supply to hard drive was loose, firmly reattached the random crashes stopped all well and good...

That was until I tried to run my video editing software, it started to load correctly then would crash part way through. I re enstalled it, no good. I downloaded the latest patch, no good. Removed it and re enstalled again, same problem. Tried to do a system restore, no good. Then ie went wonky. Netscape browser works ok but not great. I de fragged the hardrive and have tried reloading windows, all no good. Just about everything else is running fine, apart from it keeps asking me to install a fax disc!?!

Now my question is, is it best to back up, format and start again or am I better off doing something else?

I'm running xp sp2.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers

Nick

Lol get your Windows XP cd Boot from CD and wait to go recovery console once thats done (This should run from DOS mode) , type in CHKDSK if it says there no error's type CHKDSK /P that will force it to scan and it should fix your problem.

corpsey, make sure your information is correct.

/p
Performs an exhaustive check even if the drive is not marked for chkdsk to run. This parameter does not make any changes to the drive.
You want to run chkdsk /r

/r
Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

In a matter of Fact , my machine at home would not boot at all , so i shoved my xp cd and done chkdsk , and it said my DRIVE is fine but if you would like to force the check please type CHKDSK /P so i did that then it said , there was 1 or more errors on the drive, so i reboot and wala ! all fixed so dont tell me to get my info correct when it has worked for me thank you very much!
