Vista needs too much of resources. It seems better to wait for sometime and continue with XP (Service Pack 2). It is working great.

did u buy an oem pre-installed vista machine ? bcoz such usually come with a lot of crapware which actually slow down the machins. try "PC DeCrapifier" to remove such unwanted craplets. reduce startups. for more u may refer How To Make Vista Start, Run and Shutdown Faster.

Try a defrag and a diskcleaner.
