one of the biggest things that will slow down your computer is background programs. go to run, then type msconfig, then startup and uncheck everything except your antivirus and firewall. also search for guides on removing unwated fonts and windows services. and if you dont mind spending a bit of money a ram upgrade will help allot

Default Slow Start Up with XP Pro

1 question is all that is needed. Are you on a network? No? then your startup is taking time trying to find a network domain, like an office full of computers trying to say to each other. You can disable this by the above post.
