Hey,
ive got vista on my new laptop, and so far all ive got on my new laptop is a 23gb folder i transfered over from my old computer, and a few programs installed. the computer has a 160gb HD partitioned into 74gb (c:), and 73gb(e:),so its 147gb before its partitioned, and i assume the 12gb thats missing off that is used for windows. now i originally had my 23gb folder on my desktop but noticed that that in the c: drive 51gb was taken up dispite the fact that i had only put 23gb worth of stuff onto my computer. i have now moved this folder to the e: drive which is now obviously down by 23gb, but dispite moving that folder from the c: drive it still has 23gb being used on it, does anyone have any idea why this is? cheerd guys, don.

If you will look at the documentation, somewhere in it it will say 160gb Max. and should also say somewhere what the remaining space is used for.

Someone else can surely explain it better then me but it is like that with everything. mp3 players flash drives. They all advertise the Max amount. But there is space missing in all of them when you compare the capacity to free space.

Yep ... it's because HDD manufacturers calculate the size, using the Decimal system (1000 bytes = one kilobyte) ........ whereas your PC works it out using Binary (1024 bytes = one kilobyte), which is correct.

This means that an 80 GB drive will show about 74.5GBs in Windows and the larger the drive the larger the difference. It works out approximately 7% different.

For example : One of my 400gb drives, shows in Windows (My Computer) as 372gb or 400,077,586,432 bytes

thanks for the replys guys, but this isnt entirely what im after, i already knew my 160 gb hd is only infact 147gb due to what you have all told me, but the thing i really wanna know is why the 74gb partition is saying its got 23gb worth of data on, when all it has is windows, programs files etc in it, which when you select all those folders only come to 12gb. cheers don.

A few reasons that might apply :

1. Hidden Files & Folders - go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View and change to show hidden files/folders then untick Hide Protected Operating System Files

2. Empty the Recycle Bin

Then check again
