I'm currently running 66 processes which is eating 40% of my 4GBs of RAM. That to me seems a little much. So I open task manager to do what I used to do with good old XP, close some unneeded stuff. problem is, I don't know what I'm allowed to get rid of here.

With XP someone told me "you can get rid of everything except these two programs" is there a similar rule for vista?

No.

Most of that stuff is Vista related. Its a bit of a resource hog.

What you can do is go and look in the bottom right of the task bar and close and progams in the Quick Launch menu that you don't need. See if thats any improvement.

Also, if you download CCleaner it will allow you to remove these programs from unnecessarily starting up in the first place.

CCleaner Download

I figured out part of the problem I think. I installed a dedicated graphics card and RAM usage went down to 29%. Although at the moment it's sitting at 43% (Firefox, AIM, xfire, setpoint, and G15 software)

I have yet to install CCleaner on this PC, it's like two days old. I'll get on that

EDIT: Holy crap. So many registry issues on a young computer. Why?

Installing programs.... etc.

Most of the 'issues' make no difference to the actual PC.
