An emachines 4250 Intel Celeron D processor 345 80GB HDD 512MB RAM. The problem is the other tower my brother has (which he is using) keeps crashing with blue screen of death and freezing continously despite the better specs it has. The other is Packard Bell 3GHZ Intel Pentium 4 1GB RAM 160GB.

So we want to format the other one so he can use it. The problem with it is that it crashed and when rebooted blue screen came up apparently saying XP needed to be reinstalled with 2 options: 1. put back to factory settings and 2. reinstall xp and backup files which is the option he selected. Then it started installing XP which it apparently completed and when he rebooted pc everything was back to default settings. He wanted to gain access to some apparently hidden files (there is a thread on here about it somewhere) but it still says access is denied to a lot of stuff he wants as there is only 6GB left on the hard drive. So he started using the other pc which was fine for the first month or so (its an older computer) and then keeps crashing most times he starts it up now, so its of no real use to him.

We were going to reformat but we don't have an XP disc.

Are you sure its not overheating in anyway? OR maybe a faulty driver is causing the PC to crash.

Thanks for the suggestions. We werent planning on keeping the tower anyway it was only a backup cos the other one my brother had wasnt working, but we're just going to reformat the hard drive and start again. And yes everything has been backed up.

Thanks guys.
