Hey all, just a quick one, I noticed that through doing absolutely naf all, my PC is using 29% of my RAM. I didnt think this was so bad but I noticed a single process (Svchost.exe) was using over 220k of memory all on it's own, sat idle it's using all of this..

Just wondering if that's normal because I've played full games that use less memory than that..

Yes, it's normal.

Microsoft moved the functionality of it's internal services from exe's to dll's. Dll's however cannot be executed directly. SVChost runs the dll's for Window's sevices which is why you see so many instances of SVCHost running.

I have multiple of them as I've done on XP and my Vista 32 laptop, none of them take up 220k of RAM in one process though.. That is, there are multiple svchost processes running taking up between about 4k and 18k of memory, why should one take up clear over 200k?

Check taskman and see if that RAM is being cached, otherwise I'd start looking at services.msc to see if anything weird is starting as a service.

Are you using Vista or XP on the system that's having this problem?

On Vista the system will cache a lot of memory (sometimes over a GB) to speed up allocation for frequently used programs. This is usually a good thing as RAM that is sitting idle is simply wasted, but sometimes it can make other programs, the ones Vista hasn't figured out you use yet, open slower. 7 has a lot of fixes to this.

This is on my Vista 64 system. Looks like it's going to be caching it all for the programs it thinks I use. Apparently I use Google Chrome "Rarely", although it's my primary browser lol.

I've got 8Gb of RAM so I'm not worried. Looks like I'll go and grab Windows 7 when it comes out in october :D

Ah, with 8GB I wouldn't worry anyway. It sucks for 2GB systems though, it absolutely massacred my memory when I was trying to launch TF2, etc as I'd only have about half a gig available and it refused to cache it.

Yeah, I'll keep an eye on it as I go along but in 6 months time I expect Vista to be far gone from this PC, I hate it as it is.. Nothing but issues.. Thanks for the help :)

if I had something on Vista that was only using 220K of memory I'd be happy. LOL! But, if you're interested, MS Process explorer is a much more useful version of Task manager and you could get a much better idea of what that svchost process is doing and even possibly elimate some or all of it by suspending or killing threads within it.
