Hi guys,

I noticed today that several items were missing from the task bar on my PC, the speaker volume and network connection icons being two of them. I tried, through the control panel, to activate the icons again but to no avail. I clicked the check boxes in the audio and network connections then apply and then ok but still no good. when I went back to the control panel the boxes were unchecked and despite trying again the boxes would always revert to being unchecked.

To save time messing about I decided to use windows system restore to revert to an earlier setting. I have used windows restore before without any problems but when I tried it today and ended up with a message box which says :

"System restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and then run system restore again"

I have restarted several times and also have tried sytem restore in safe mode but always get the same message. Nothing seems to work.

I hope someone can tell me how to get sytem restore to start working again.

Thanks all

Frank

Command Prompt Window -- sfc /scannow

The action cited above seems to have restored the missing icons to the tray for my situation. This same action was recommended in another forum for the System Restore message you have noted. The cited forum did not report on the results of this action.

My Win XP Home load is an OEM version. The XP CD was not needed. Following the execution of the SFC command, a re-start was performed. The system tray was populated with the expected icons, including the "missing" icons.

The following link adds to a suggestion from philthomas. It describes the command mode environment under safe mode to run the system restore.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I have tried the microsoft fixes and I still get the same message, so I can't get any further.

I have tried scannow and it says I need the original XP CD for files to be copied.
I have the OEM CD but I have since upgraded to service pack 2 so the CD won't work.
I will need to see if I can get hold of an XP sp2 CD and try again.
If that doesn't work I don't know where to look next.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated

Frank
