It sounds like a Recovery Disk problem to me.

If you have a Microsoft Windows XP Installation Disk, it might be worth trying to boot with that, jusat to see if it willinstall ok.
I know you wont be able to activate it, but it will at least test the hardware for you.

If it works ok, then I think you can guess what you/he need to buy

Don't beleive this!

After the unmpteenth reinstall, the machine just booted into windows after the install routine. What do you make of that? Does this implicate the new hard drive...?

Given that the same issues happened with the Windows 7 RC install, don't think that points to the MESH disk though.

Sorry ... I missed the bit in your post#10 about same thing happening on Windows 7 install.

That does sound weird though, that suddenly it installs ok. It's impossible to say why, but if it's all running ok, dont worry about it. You could runa chkdsk /r on the drive, if you want to check it.
