Well it's like this, I need to update my video driver after reinstalling XP Home sp2. When I try to run the driver update it says "You must be logged on as an administrator to install this". Alright no problem I think, until I realize the only way to do this is to start up in safe mode which leaves me unable to install it...

This is my very stressful problem. Does any one know how I can install this driver with out having to use the built in admin account or if there is any way to log in to it with out safe mode.

Really appreciate any help.

Are you the Administrator?

Right click the file and select "Run as administrator".

Are you using the driver from the manufacturer's website; it should either be ATI or Nvidia.

My account has admin rights but I'm guessing it means I need to log on to the actual admin account which is impossible on xp home. I have tried the run as but I get an error when I put the admin details in and yes I downloaded it from the manufacturers website.

Try creating a new account with Admin control, you could also try setting a password, running the file as admin and entering the password.

I've done both of them and neither one worked. The problem is XP home just won't allow me to access the admin account out side of safe mode.

Have you been able to install the drivers in the past?

Can you not use a different O/S?

Try this, I made this faq many a moon ago now but it should still work ;)
Quote:

1. Firstly you will have to login in safe mode"do this by pressing F8 at boot up", login as Administator

2. Now click on start then run

3. Type cmd and hit enter,You should now see the command prompt screen

4.Then type in net user "netspaceuser" then hit enter, from there you will see all the accounts on the computer

5.Now to change the original password without knowing or remembering the previous one type in net user nameofuser * ie if it was me I would type in net user SocialWarfare * then hit enter

6.Now it will ask you to type in a new password, you can either leave it blank by just pressing enter twice or you can enter any password you want, for example type 1234 enter then confirm new password 1234 enter, then type exit and then hit enter.

Thats it password changed

Now when you log on that will be the new password or if you leave it blank it will just login automatically

Even though the FAQ above should help you(havent tried it myself though) i reckon just logging in with your usual account in safe mode and installing the driver packet should do the job as well.
