System: Advent T9408, Core2 CPU 4300@ 1.8ghZ: 1022MB: 32Bit:Vista Home Premium. Suddenly when starting I receive a message from the toolbar regarding my internet modem connection stating 'This USB connection has not been recognised', then a small box appears 'This device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port' After changing to an alternative USB slot and re starting it'll work fine. But even if I do this on start up and change to the USB port which it stated wasn't working the day before it now does! So to recap - I have to start up, change the USB port connection after everything else settles down, and re start to connect to the internet. Any ideas?

I had exactly the same thing!!! Weird isn't it! I don't really know what I did other than that mine is now plugged into a high speed port on the side of my monitor via an USB extension thing...

| Yep .... lots of the cheapo USB Modems, supplied by ISPs, pull too much power and cause probs.

As the previous poster says, an externally powered USB Hub will probably solve it, or you could fit a PCI USB Card. Better still dump the cheapo Modem and get a decent one, (or a Router/Modem, if you are considering Wireless) with it's own PSU and an Ethernet connection. My System: Home Build

Phew! at least now I know I'm not alone with this problem. The modem was indeed supplied by my ISP and has worked fine up until now, I swapped it over to my work laptop and it works fine there, so I'm assuming I, or a programme has altered some setting or other that has made this occur, and honestly I'd rather firstly try to work out and solve the problem than buy something to overcome it, I'll do that if nothing else works. By the way the reluctance to purchase aspect of it isn't because I'm one of the renowned tight Scots!

If it's worked fine until now, it could be a sign that your PSU is on the way out. IMO it's unlikely to be anything to do with settings. It's not a Speedtouch jobbie is it, as they are well known for draining the power.

OMG yes, it's a Thomson - SpeedTouch 330! is it that bad? To replace it I just go buy a replacement and switch units? No farting about with any ISP problems or anything? Just install and go?

What do you want to replace it with ? ... i.e. a wired modem/router or a wireless modem/router ? To be honest, these days there isn't a lot of difference in price, so you may as well get the wireless one. Something like a Linksys or Netgear will work well. You will need to configure it and enter your ISP username/password, but it's quite a simple task .... if you get stuck, anyone here will be able to advise you.
