Ok so my computer has been giving me the message:

The USB device is not recognized.

But there is no device that has been plugged in.

Any advice?

Try uninstalling the USB Controllers, in Device Manager and rebooting ..... these will automaticaaly reinstall and may flush out the problem.

try disabling each usb root hub in device manager. if one has failed you would get that message. for example if you have an external hub with nothing plugged in but the hub fails you would get that message or if the onboard hubs or root hubs fail you get that message. after all, they are all only usb devices, from root hub to mouse to anything usb.
