i think i might have done something pretty serious here.
i already had vista ultimate installed, then i tried to install XP, but the installation failed due to a power loss. i later tried to boot into vista, but i got the message: insert proper boot device and restart or insert boot media into boot device in selected boot device. tonight i tried a repair from a vista disk, but that couldnt even see my installlation. i installed windows again this afternoon and it booted fine, but i didnt get the bootloader screen like i should have. and when i'm in my new vista installation all the windows files are still in place on the old installation. how can i recover my old installation? and if i install a new copy of vista on the old partition, will just the old windows files move to the windows.old folder or will all my settings, files, programs etc move there as well? any help is much appreciated, thanks. |

go into disk management and delete the secondary partition first of all, then boot you vista disk from the desktop. install this way but place vista over the main partition and do an advanced install. thanks

thanks for the reply, i have fixed it now
i put easy BCD on the second partition and ran the startup repair on the vista cd, then i deleted the second partition, but i still got a blue screen trying to boot into the original partition, so I ran the startup repair again and everything was fine. |
