i have vista and the first day i bought my comp i noticed the hard drive indecator light would flash all the time .... in task manager i am using 1 cpu or less with my avast virus scanner and it always does this any ideas?

It's because Vista is indexing all your files for faster searching, it should settle down.

If it doesn't you can turn of the indexing services.

thank you ... how would faster searching affect me... like searching through files or actualy opening them?

There are about 3 services you need to disable.

If it's a new install you don't need to defrag, just turn off the search and spyware win defender services.

yeah ima keep the spyware stuff on XD i download alot also ... i just got a defrag done i had 30 gb left on my comp and when it was done i had 49 gb is that possible to gain 20 gb from a defrag?

You dont gain space by defragging, it only moves files around so they can be accessed quicker.
