My 1 year old compaq on vista seems to take forever to start up compared to a friends on xp.

I've used ashampoo to tune start up and unnecessary services which helped but it still seems slow.

Anti virus/spyware all upto date (Panda).

What else could I try? Do I need more than 512 RAM?

Thanks

if i remember write vista wont install on a pc with less than 512mb of ram

Find out how much RAM your computer has
Open System by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.

consider doing this to help speed things up in your vista

Yes, basicly, 1GB is the recommended Minimum for Vista if my memory serves, but I would recommend you getting a 2GB pair (2 sticks of 1GB) But for this, you will need to know what motherboard you have (so you can get compatible RAM) do you know this? Or do you want me to explain how to find out?

Thanks for the replies.
I'll check out start up list and also remove some of the vista components.

Friends have used crucial for RAM upgrades. Are they the best people to use?
I think they scan your machine and make recommendations don't they?

Thanks again.

I didn't know Crucial had a scanner, but yes, that would be very good to try, but I wouldn't recommend getting crucial RAM just because of that, but you could use it to find out what's compatible with your computer, then we can see about getting you the best stuff.

well this program will tell you what motherboard you have copy it all down or print it out and you can then find out what memory is compatible or take that info in a pc shop and they will tell you what ram they have for it
if you live in uk this website> that sells ram at no stupid prices is www.overclockers.co.uk

Thanks for all the advice.

I replaced the 512mb ram with 2gb and it's like a new machine!

So much faster both starting up and using it for surfing/email etc

Many thanks

Great. As others have said 512MB just isn't enough for Visa.
