I have a DELL inspiron 700m laptop. The OS is windows XP. Yesterday the laptop was turned off via the power button rather than through the "shut down" process.

Today, when i hit the "power on" button all i get is the splash screen followed by a black screen stating:

"we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

if a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.

---it then gives five options.
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
Last known good configuration
start windows normally
I've tried them all but it still reverts to the same screen.
Anyone ever experience this before?

Do you have a Windows CD, sounds like corrupt files so you need to repair them.

Try last known good configuration mode and see if it works.
