Well done ....... there are a number of ways to recover from UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME, some easy, some not so easy, but at the end of the day, it's what works that counts and what you did worked, so that is great.

Here is the M$ solution, which should work too.

If the same problem (UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME) is happening regularly, it could be a sign that your Hard Drive is on the way out.
You could go to your Hard Drive Manufacturer's website and download their diagnostic tool to check out the drive.
Either way, it would be a good idea to back up your important data, until you know what is causing it.

Did you check whether your IDE Cable is an 80 conductor cable ? .... it could be something as simple as this. If you're not sure how to tell, just count the ridges in the ribbon, if you get past 40 and you are around the centre, then it's an 80 conductor

The way in the MS link seems simpler to me but as long as you got it sorted that is all that matters.

You don't use Firefox as you're browser by any chance do you?

I had the exact same problem with Firefox the a while ago. Downloading something, all froze up and then BSOD.

I didn't even try rebooting, I just stuck my restore disk in and loaded the last nights backup. I wish I had tried rebooting now and seeing if I got an Unmountable Boot Volume.

I sometimes get freezes with Mozilla just when a download finishes. I think it is because my computer is a little on the slow side...

Maybe I will submit a bug report... I need to try and reproduce it...

I would wager that it's more likely bad sectors causing Firefox to crash, rather than Firefox causing the crash & Unmountable Boot Volume issue.

Quite probably. But I do get a noticeable slow down when Firefox finishes downloading something.

Strange .... I haven't heard any complaints so far, about Firefox and these sort of issues, but anything is possible I guess.
Having said that, you didn't reboot and get the "Unmountable" message, so maybe your crash/freeze was caused by RAM or a system glitch of some sort.
