Do you have an XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:
  • Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter (note the space between scf and /scannow)
    • Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away
SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right-click My Computer and click on Manage.
In the new window that appears, expand the Event Viewer (by clicking on the + symbol next to it) and then click on System.

Default When Logging on......

Are you aware that you have Symantec/Norton running along with AVG and Comodo?

Open Hijackthis and select Do a system scan only and then place a check mark next to:
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
  • O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)

  • O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
Close all windows except for Hijackthis and click Fix checked.

Do you use Broadbandadvisor?

OK, heres something else you can try since I doubt System File Checker is going to work anyway.

Download this Reg Fix
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...top_fixall.vbs

Double click on the icon when it has finished downloading and follow the onscreen prompts.

Edit: Just noticed evilfantasy has replied as well. There is no harm in doing this aswell.

You didn't get all of the norton/symantec uninstalled. There are 3 or 4 services running from it.

Fix the items I noted with Hijackthis and post an uninstall list.

Create An Uninstall List
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list button and specify where you would like to save this file and click Save.
    • When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
  • Copy and paste that list in your reply.

Default When Logging on......

You actually have too many security programs running.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall:
  • LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
  • LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)
  • RPS Ad Blocker
  • RPS AntiFraud
  • RPS AntiSpyware
  • RPS AntiVirus
  • RPS App Detector
  • RPS AsRealtime
  • RPS Backup
  • RPS Burn
  • RPS Diagnostic Utility
  • RPS Firewall
  • RPS ParentalControl
  • RPS Performance Tool
  • RPS PopupBlocker
  • RPS Privacy Manager
  • RPS RpsCore
  • RPS Security Cleanup
  • RPS Zip
  • Virgin Broadband advisor 1.5.14
  • Virgin Broadband PCguard
----------

Now run the Norton Removal Tool

----------

Install and run CCleaner Slim (No Toolbar) <- Keep this and run it daily.

----------

Your Java is out of date.
Older versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version(s) of Java components and update.

Step 1 - Get the new version
  • Go to the Sun Java Download Page
  • On the Sun Java page scroll to the 5th download. Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
  • Click the button and choose the options.
    • Platform Windows
    • Language English
    • Next place a check mark in the box to agree to the License Agreement.
  • "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Step 2 - Remove old version(s)
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove Java(TM) 6 Update 3
  • Do not remove Java 6 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each old Java version.
  • Restart your computer once all Java components are removed.
Step 3 - Remove old folder(s)
  • Double click My Computer on the desktop, Locate this folder: C:\Program Files\Java
  • Open the Java folder and delete any subfolders except the jre1.6.0_06 folder which was just created by the newest Java installation.

Default When Logging on......

sorry can i ask a question? its totaly off topic and while i wait for java i thought i could ask.

i have a computer with DDR ram, i want to upgrade it, its an RM computer, ive used the Crucial scanning method to try and find the speeds of RAM i can put in, i know the maximum size, but its the speeds im worried about, if i bought a piece of RAM that is faster then would the motherboard can handle, will it not accept it, or will it slow it down to the maximum it can handle?

+ do i have to use norton removal tool, it will take off my norton ghost 10
