Default White progress bar on Boot Up takes ages ?

Hi Guys

Problem : On Boot up just before the windows XP loading screen i get a White progress bar located at the bottom of a completely black screen which takes 2-3 mins to complete.

In the 2 years i have had my PC i have never had this progress bar, nor having to wait ages to get into XP

What i have done .....

A complete tear down of the system and reassembly

A complete HDD reformat with a fresh copy of XP media ( Tried this twice and still no luck )

I have been into the control pannel and have made sure all drivers are loaded which they are.

I have cleared the COSMOS

I just can't work it out, i have done many reformats in the past and never had this problem ,

Any ideas ?

Does it disappear if you press Esc? Sounds like possibly you are doing a full memory check at each startup. Enable quick start in the BIOS screen?

Hi Mike

I've been into the BIOS " Quick Power On Self Test" It was on "Enable" so i disabled it but still getting the white progress bar. If i press esc nothing happends it just keeps loading.

I'm using a Maxtor 40G ATA 133 HDD but have just test the system with a 300G / 7200 Seagate to see if it makes any difference which it dose ?

On the Maxtor the progress bar takes ages to load but when using the Seagate its much faster ? It still isnt right but loads alot quicker.

Why would that be ?

Many thanks

Mark

Are you running anything at startup? Have you recently installed a defragger that does boot-time defragging? Or boot-time virus scanning? Have you enabled any security options to wipe the swap file at each shutdown?

Just some possibilities.

What happens if you start in safe mode? (Hold F8 down during POST.) Where does it hesitate?

Hi Mike

Are you running anything at startup? Nope

Loads into safe mode "without the white bar " but alot of text appears before it goes into the windows safe mode password screen, i get a page of very similar commands to this, this is just one of many "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\syste m32\ntoskrnal.exe. They all start the same " multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system 32\ " ect.....

Yes, but did it stall anywhere loading safe mode? What you describe is normal BTW.
Expect Safe Mode to be slightly slower loading.

Try also deleting c:\hiberfil.sys if you have one. (Enable view hidden files in Tools Options View)
