Hi Guys 1st timer on here & have to say it looks good & just what i need to help me with my lack of brain power when it comes to computers....Anyways can someone tell me why i can't reboot my computer with my back-up disc.I have done a reboot a couple of times without any problems until now. When i try & install xp it says it can't install as the version i'm trying to delete is a newer version than the one i will be installing. So i tryed to take out SP2 ( from add & remove ) but it failed & will not let me remove it.As you maybe aware i'm a complete nugget, monkey, muppet bawhead & whatever else springs to mind.So can anyone tell me how to reboot this computer as the window is half open & the computer is almost half out....Any help would be welcome on this subject....thx

Its a reinstall or repair not a reboot mate just so you know the correct term.

In order to do a repair and keep all your current settings the same you must use the disc with the same version of XP that is on your PC, if you cannot remove SP2 you are stuck.

You can however still do a reinstall, which wipes everything and puts the PC back to the default settings, just like if it were fresh out the box on the day you bought it.

Let me know if this explains it or if you need further help.

Dave.

Yer it's a reinstall then:o.Thats what i must have done the last time.It cleared all my games, files, pictures etc as like new out the box as you said. The reason i want to do it is because my IE7 is not working( i'm on firefox just now ) & i think it maybe a virus so i would like to clear everything to be on the safe side & restart again.I have downloaded a newer version of IE7 but it still does not work ( the home page comes up fine but nothing else happens after i click on 1 of my favs.So how do i do a full reinstall if it's telling me the windows version i'm deleting is newer than the one i'm ready to install...thx Dave for the quick reply.

Hi Maria , I was using IE7 for about 4-5 months with no probs until last week.It runs very slow online & most times it will only go to my home page & will take like 3 mins to surf a web page.I think i may have got a virus & tryed to reinstall windows xp to get my IE7 to work again. But it will not let me as stated in my 1st post because of SP2....If i take out IE7 & then install it again, do you think it will work ? & will this sort out the problem i have with SP2 ? ( why do computers not like me )

Do you use Anti Virus , and System Cleaners because if IE7 is working but very slow you may be infected and / or your system is clogged, so lets start with a good clean of your system, if you don't have See Bellow please download and run. then post back please.

AVG Free Anti Virus > Click Here

CCleaner Free Cleaner > Click Here

I have both & also Norton. I also did a disk defragmenter & disk cleanup with no help what so ever. I think i'll need to put it into the shop for the guy to reinstall it back to basics.( i just hate giving these guys £35 for putting in a disc & pressing enter grrrrrr ). I think i'll have no option but to do as you said about removing IE7 & then insted of installing it again i'll put in my windows backup disc & try & install windows like the way i first bought it.If this does not work can i still use firefox to install IE7 again ?

If you do reinstall IE7 download it from Microsoft (also check you updates) to desktop turn off AV install IE7 and reboot twice.

How long before Norton runs out ?

This situation is like when you run Windows 98 normally the decide to put 95 on it.
You will get an error msg that you cannot backtrack so to speak.
You can of course but you need to format the hard drive properly before doing so.
I have no idea what kind of disk you are trying to use but it is not the one that came with the pc.
Did you in fact get an XP disk with the pc?
I'm just hoping the backup is not on a seperate partition.
If you did get an OEM version of XP then you need to alter your initial boot sequence to the CDROM first.
Put the disk in and when it asks you to "Press any key to boot from CD" do so.
Delete the existing XP system that you have and recreate it then install.
It will ask later also after a couple of reboots to press any key to boot from cd, PRESS NOTHING.
Let everything install, input the time, date, location and the 25 digit/character keycode when it asks and you should be ok.
We need more info mate, get back to us please.

Norton is crap, it slows you PC down and does a terrible job of keeping it clean.

From what you are telling us you have a virus and spyware problem.

Remove Norton and use a free anti-virus like Avast.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Also download spybot and run full scans with both.

It will sort your problem.
