I will try Avast but i'm sure i have more than enough anti-virus on my computer ( norton, avg, spybot serch & destroy & cc cleaner ) Also i uploaded my screen shots of my problem to photobucket but can't seem to get my screen shots onto the forum ?....Maria my norton is out of date on december 07.....Wolfey when i put the disc into my drive it does not ask me to press any button it gives me 4 options it says What do you want to do ? .Option 1. Install Windows XP....Option 2. Install optional Windows components...Option 3. Perform additional tasks....Option 4. Check system compatibility........I don't know if this will help you on understanding what disc i have, but if it's any help it says on the disc microsoft xp home back up copy....I got this computer made for me about 4 years ago & thats the disc the shop gave me & it came with my Product number.....I have used this disc before to reinstall windows & i have also done it on a couple of my m8's computers with there disc's, only there disc's say Recovery disc ?......As a noob i maynot be explaning myself correctly to you's sorry for this but i'll try & answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

Hi tigerplank

I really would conceder uninstalling Norton as Dave said its not a good application to have installed "sorry you have wasted money on it", so you have run all your AV and spyware apps ? Yes ! any thing showing, if you go for a clean install make sure you have backed up all you want to save and that you have drivers for your printer etc, the disk you describe go option 1 install Windows XP you will then see the options to format our hard drive just follow the on screen instructions.

Your completely missing the point, you can have 15 anti-virus programs but its no good if there all from company's who make crap software.

Anti-virus makes are like car manufacturers, although they can all make cars it doesn't mean they are all good.

My advice is as my last post, remove all your AV and spy-ware software and replace it with Avast and spybot, scan and clean, if you won't take my advice how can we help you?

Alternatively spend the next few days re-installing windows, but for the sake of spending half hour trying what has been suggested I know what I'd choose.

I am just a step up from the original poster, but have a question -- why not uninstall IE7 -- reinstall 6 with the disk, stick with 6 and use Firefox as primary browser? -

-Norton is crap /is the avg you have the virus ware or the spyware tool? If the virus ware -- I have always heard[read] more than one will cause Problems -
- Savage
[!st post but we all start somewhere]:D

You can of course but you need to format the hard drive properly before doing so.
I have no idea what kind of disk you are trying to use but it is not the one that came with the pc.
Did you in fact get an XP disk with the pc?
I'm just hoping the backup is not on a seperate partition.
If you did get an OEM version of XP then you need to alter your initial boot sequence to the CDROM first.
Put the disk in and when it asks you to "Press any key to boot from CD" do so.
Delete the existing XP system that you have and recreate it then install.
It will ask later also after a couple of reboots to press any key to boot from cd, PRESS NOTHING.
Let everything install, input the time, date, location and the 25 digit/character keycode when it asks and you should be ok.
We need more info mate, get back to us please.
Hi Wolefy ( sorry m8 ).As you know i'm a complete nugget with computers & only know the very basics.
Q1 yes i got a back up copy of xp disc.....
Q2 The last time i had to put it into the shop as i had 2 partitions on my computer ( 1 was 47gb & the other was like 8mb ) & i told the guy to take out 1 of the partitions ( i don't know how it got there & i hope he took it out )....
Q3 I don't know what OEM means ? & i don't understand the rest of the question.I don't know if this is because i don't know much about computers or i'm thick or even both:o...
Q4 It does not ask me to boot from cd it gives me options as stated in previous reply....I'm sorry i can't be of more help to you in answering your questions.....It's no major deal thou as i can just take it into the shop but then this may & probly will happen again & again.

Edited to make readable.

Don't insult yourself mate we all have to start some where.
An OEM = Original Equipment Manufacture.
All I'm trying to point out is that you are just inserting the disk in the cdrom drive while the pc is on and the situation you describe will happen.
You need to boot into the bios to change settings so as to boot from the cdrom with the XP disk in rather than from your hard drive as you are doing now.
Do you know how to access the bios?
