SO please explain for idiots just exactly how this works. IE: If I want to try this beta I just download and install it? What happens to my Vista? If it's that simple then why do they have a problem with pirated copies?

Nope. Its a completely new OS. So you need to boot into it, ie either Vista or Windows 7.

Have a look at kanoakavirus's link:

So anyone got it running? Any issues with drivers? What's new, what's different?

I have a few copies in VMs.

Haven't played around with it much yet though. Will start trying to break it soon :)

Installed on netbook, after the usual (one driver installed, UI changed, UAC off) I love it. Probably will use as main. Had a more updated driver for my chipset than Intel did on their website, everything's been painless so far.

It does feel different than Vista, at least at first. I didn't like the new dock as of now - too much screen space taken up at 1024x600, as well as WLM being viewed as two windows, so I set it back to original height and classic style bars.

The biggest thing is this is a usability step up, which is absolutely huge. Better competition with OS X is definitely on the way. Preview is nice, one click everything is nice, it's all relatively simple but hides some advanced stuff.

I think if you're running a 64bit host OS then you can run a 64 bit client VM but not 100% sure.

I will test it :)
