I bought windows 7 yesterday and they sent me a link to a download. The exe wouldn't run on my xp machine (apparently because the version I downloaded is 64bit) and so I converted it to an .iso. However, the machine I have doesn't have an DVD burner. I can move the file to my laptop which does have a DVD burner but I dont have burning software and I'm concerned that it won't burn anyway because the file is 6GB (too big for a DVD disc).

Is it possible to put the iso on an external hard drive and boot from that?

Thanks,

Steve

7 can be installed simply by mounting the iso and going, but the reason shouldn't be that it's 64 vs 32 bit - if that were the case, the installer would tell you rather than not run at all.

Sorry carbon, im quite new to this. What do you mean by "mounting and going"? The exe file started to run but then failed at the end saying something about not having a permission to access the folder where the files were. Another guide said that this is because you cand upgrade to windows 7 from xp and a clean install is required...

Oh, I understand now. Known issue especially if you're using the Digital River student promotion.

I'd first try mounting the iso using Daemon Tools or PowerISO or what have you and seeing if that works.

Thanks, do you know if an .iso will burn over more than one DVD or will I need to get a dual layer DVD? The size of the iso is 6GB...

Don't think it'll work over more than one DVD, there's no prompt on the disc to split it up. I think you'll need a dual-layer if you want to burn it, unfortunately.

You can install it from a memory stick too if you have one

6gb seems too large for the iso file ...... are you sure it's that size ?

I have x64 Retail Disk for Home Premium, which is only a little over 3gb.

Thanks for your help. I put the iso on an 8gb usb drive and installed from there. Worked fine but am still waiting for digitalriver to send me the f*cking key! However, the windows 7 aero feature isnt working, im guessing its because I have an integrated graphics card (radion 4500 series). Does anyone know what graphics card will support the aero feature, I dont need a graphics card for gaming.

Huh, I thought there was one IGP that wasn't supported but I didn't think it was that one. In any case, a 4350 should work and is cheap, I'd get a passive one so you don't end up having more noise than before.
