It doesn't sound as though the Eurpean Commision are too happy with Microsoft's decision not to include it :

"The Commission has suggested that consumers should be offered a choice of browser not that Windows should be supplied without a browser at all," said the Commission, in a statement responding to Microsoft's announcement."

Sounds like Microsoft are playing games, good on them I say.

Every PC owner on the planet has a multitude of choices in OS and browser, the reason Microsoft have a OS monopoly is because the competition isn't up to the job, it simply isn't usable by the mass market. They can't even give it away as most of the public can't even get Linux installed not to mention games, which are a big reason PC's are so popular in the first place.

If MS were undercutting the competition, because they could afford to for whatever reason, pricing competition out of the market then that could be unfair, but they are expensive and people still vote with their wallets over the free stuff. Because it works and it works well.

I will never understand monopoly & competition legislation ...... always seems to me, like the "Legislators", bend to pressure, from the less successful whingers.

You don't like Linux then Dave ?

I have used it a lot, loads of distro's and thought is was fine, but the general public wouldn't agree when they have to spend weeks setting up drivers and network cards, which is common, even for experienced PC users. It just doesn't work out of the box like Windows does. Most PC users are not geeks.

Like I said I don't see how they are stopping other companies from getting ahead, if anything they are helping with their prices. I mean Linux is free, so are many browsers even open office. But they still hold market share charging £100's for a word processor.

If you can't give your product away for free over a high priced product, maybe there is a problem with the product or your marketing lol.

I'm all up for competition, but good competition. Microsoft were not offered any quick route to the top and I don't see why anyone else should be.

A good example is Google.

Google is Windows, the Internet is the PC, Google ads are IE and CJ is FF.

Can I sue Google for showing it's own ads above me in the search results?

They have a monopoly on all the traffic going through it's search engine.

But I could use a different search engine... for free if I dont like it.

Can Yahoo (Linux) sue for the same reasons of Google cornering the search market.

It's basically the same thing.

Yeah ... I agree .... Linux is not for newcomers, but the Live CDs (i.e. Puppy) can come in handy, once you know a little.

As you say M$ Software does work well, despite all the moans 'n groans and is pretty user friendly at the end of the day.
I cant see M$ including browsers, from the opposition and dont see why they should either, but it will be interesting to see what they do though.

I found getting it installed and working the most difficult part. It can be a right pain in the ass. Other than that I loved it and would have probably switched over it I could just get it working properly.

Sorry, seems I have gone way off topic here.

I think I must have said this a thousand time before...

Windows for most home users, end user interfaces.

Linux for servers / mainframes.

That is the way it works best. You cannot beat a Linux web server, way simpler, faster and reliable than any Windows system and IIS.

But it would be horrible to try and use the Linux box for web browsing, the IIS box would be just like a normal PC.

But anyone could set up the IIS box, it would take a lot more knowledge to set up the Linux webserver running Apache or similar.

I think it is going to take a long time for this to change.
