I have been given a laptop with Windows 98 with AMD. On examination the file ntkern.vxd is said to be missing and consequently some drivers do not link/work. Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem or download suitable software. I have tried reinstalling from the CD and hints from the net but nothing has resolved the problem so far. It is all a bit out of date but the laptop is fine except that OE freezes. I have been recommended to ditch it but that seems a pity. Thanks.

I have found that it has an AMD K6 333 mhz processor with 64 ram. What else do you need to know.

Well, it is definitely old...
I would re-install the OS, a clean sheet will remove any errors or bugs also installing an OS is a test of the hardware inside. If it will not install the OS, it normally points to a hardware fault. |

I did reinstall Win 98 over the top of what was on the computer. I was a bit afraid of being stranded, though I have made a start-up disk. Perhaps it is the hardware, if so I do not think it is worth spending money on it. Thanks for your help.

A further point, it says the ntkern.vxd file is missing, but although at one point a message this file had been extracted from the Win 98 disk I have it has not solved the problem. And I cannot find the ntkern.vxd file when I do a search.
