Hi,
Recently, for some unknown reason, explorer lags. When I open My computer, then double click a hard drive, it freezes for ~30 seconds. I can alt tab out if I have something else running. I'm pretty sure it's not a virus. I did scans with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Spybot s&d and Avira Antivir. All turned up with no results, except cookies. Even with only explorer open, it still lags. It happens with every folder I try to access, and once I get to it, and open a document/file/program etc. it lags again, and then the items starts to open. Searched google and tried some things in the frist few results, but problem still persists. All help is appreciated.
Thanks.

It's a constant recurring thing with Windows Explorer. Microsoft have this fantasy that people want data from networked computers instead of their own hard drive. If there's any connection in the past between you and another computer which the operating system thinks was on a networked drive basis then the damn program keeps waiting and waiting to renew the connection.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841978 is an example.

It must be at least ten years that this has been going on and they never clear it up properly.

I don't suppose you've really opened another drive on another machine but if you have, try to disconnect the drive under Map Network Drives if you're done doing it.

Consider disabling the Computer Browsing service experimentally to see if that clears it up. Who on earth wants that outside a commercial environment I can't imagine.

Hmm. I've never accessed another computer on the network, because I haven't been able to successfully set it up. It just doesn't work for me. So I don't think it could be the problem, but I'll try it anyway. From the link, I don't have any network shortcuts, so that is ruled out.

I am not talking about internet explorer, but windows explorer... Windows Explorer is what allows you open 'My Computer' or 'My Documents.'

Well, after some testing of disabling Computer Browsing service, explorer is still lagging. Any more ideas?

It does sound like Windows Explorer is trying to open something that's not there, it's a long time to sit there and you describe it as hanging rather than competing for a resource. Unless there's a deleted shortcut it's trying to open I'm stuck, it's the sort of thing I'd need to sit in front of and search around for.

Hmmm. All I can think of was that I installed Avira 1-2 weeks ago, same with Office 2007. I doubt they could affect explorer...
