hi.. can anyone help please. when starting my pc i get a blank screen with the following error message.

windows will not start because the following is missing or corrupted.

system32\drivers\pci.sys.

Stick your XP cd in, boot from it, then select the SECOND repair option.

You could try putting the drive in a donor machine and running the windows hard drive file repair.

Other than that you need a CD.

ok... i have managed to locate a recovery cd for the the pc off an HP support site. it says it will restore to factory settings.. does this mean all files will be lost.

hi.. the hard drive on this unit is an HP personal removeable drive 160g. it has a a usb socket on the back. will make up a 12vdc power supply tommorrow to power it. can i easily access the files on it if i connect it via usb to another pc or will the same error message come up. or am i wasting my time trying.

Should be able to grab the files off it you plug it into another PC. Or even if you made a livecd with a Linux distribution and did it. The only thing preventing you from it is Windows.

hi there.... some how this pc booted up today. fans are constantly on... how can i fix the error that comes up at the beginning of this thread, dont wanna switch off in case it messes up again.
