Default \windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt

Hello, hope I have the right thread for this. TOday my computer was unplugged while in standby. When I rebooted it showed me that Windows could not start because the file \windows\system32\config\system was missing or corrupt. So it says I can attempt to repair the problem by using the original Setup CD Rom and using r to start a repair. However my computer is a Dell Inspiron 1300 and I have no recovery disk, only the recovery that is built into the computer (by holding ctrl f11). Is there a fix for this?I dont really want to reinstall my operating system. can I use an xp disk to repair the problem?

Thanks

Jason

This usually means the registry has become corrupted.

Try booting into Safe Mode (by tapping F8 at boot), then choose the 'Last known good configuration’ option.
