Default windows update

i dont really no anything about computers but i have been given a Celeron 1000Mhz mini-tower PC running Windows Millenium which has
been and i quote
ch> freshly installed and patched from Windows update. Software
installed
ch> includes freeware Antivirus, Firewall, Firefox and Open Office 2.
PC
ch> has USB1 ports, an ethernet port and sound hardware but no modem.
for my grandaughter i would like to update the windows to xp which i have a windows xp disc for do i just put it in and run the disc ? and i also run a pc at home and wireless laptop all on bt home hub i also have a spare netgear wireless adsl modem router could i connect to the older pc to make it wireless instead of buying a wireless usb stick and info would greatly taken in lol

Default windows update

you are going to need to you a usb stick or a ethernet connection to the router, depending where the router/computer is a usb maybe your only option.

have you got the XP activation key? if so it is as easy as putting the CD and booting from it

make sure if you got any files on there you need to back them up, firefox, office etc will be lost!

i dont claim to be a genius just trying to help

i connected my GF's router up to her computer using the ethernet cable and then a second pc using the wireless usb connection

we took the phone line cable all the way upstairs to connect to the router only for it to be sent back downstairs wirelessly, why i dont know but it seemed easier at the time

and yes the yellow cable, thats the ethernet connection,

but like i say ive only set up one for someone else and it works fine for her

Default windows update

If the system has been installed with Windows ME and has USB1 ports, that sounds as though the hardware may be quite old . If so, you may not have enough resources (especially RAM), to run XP and if you try, this may make things very slow and unresponsive ........ also you will need to find new hardware drivers for XP.

Grab a copy of Everest Home and report back with the system specs, then we can advise you better.

Default windows update

aol vr is for vista (vr = vista ready)

right you dont need internet software to run a router so deleted the aol software

get the router instruction manual

in there will be an IP you have to connect to via a web browser, something like 192.168.2.2 < thats a guess but looks similar

you then set up the router step by step

then restart your computer

open up a web browser and it should auto connect

ok but my grandaughter is only 6 so i would prefer her to only be able to sign on to aol with parent gaurd on so she can just use the site that we pick for her ? also no manual as its my old router i had with aol not with them anymore

right im getting you now

what router if you know, does shelley use?

but yes do a clean install of XP (we can guide you along the way fi needed) then find a usb wireless tick which will work with XP, install drivers and it should pick up your daughters wireless router when you give her the computer

no need to install aol

it does sound an old computer however like phil says and you may still find it slow
