I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, and i go to install MSN Live the latest version and i get this caution popup.

A critical update is needed. To continue this installation, you need to install windows update agent 5.8.02469 or later.

I'm just wondering where i can download this update without running automatic updates.

Ha! Alas, those who choose not to regularly update their software got a rather nasty surprise when trying to install one of the latest versions of Windows Live Messenger. So, where in the world was Windows Update Agent 5.8.02469? Perhaps, it was hiding right under your nose all the time. Many of our computer issues can be solved by taking care to perform a little maintenance and care on a regular basis. nevermind, i downloaded LIVE off of Microsoft website and it works now :)

Because, in the past i have updated and it has messed up my computer or so some people tell me it has

So i have reinstalled windows XP Home, but now i goto install Windows Live and i get the same error, and i can not find any where to download what it says to download. When i goto the updates page it comes up with something about the page cannot be displayed. I'm not sure why, i have the ActiveX thing it wants etc.

Any help would much appreciated.

I was having the same exact problem but then I clicked> start all programs> and at the top is> windows update> just follow through with that.Then I went to http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/Join/Default.aspx AND then it downloaded the windows live messenger with NO problems!!
What messenger needs is the updated windows install program. which windows update installs for you automatically (before checking if your genuine) and if that doesnt work <info removed> <<We don't support these activities here.
Seriously, you have no reason to turn automatic updates off... just set it to download but dont install, then you manually install (right click on the yellow shield by the clock) everything EXCEPT anything with WGA in the title... guarantee thatll make your life easier... and safer.
