Hi, for a while now I have been having a problem when installing windows updates. I appear to download them fine, but they never seem to get installed. I think that they are successfully installed, and then every time I shut down the computer, i am given the option to turn off without installing updates (which i always do now) which shows that the updates have not infact been installed. What is causing this and what is the solution? Thanks, Luke

Had this problem so many times on mine and customers PCs.

There is a lot of info online but I have never found a solution.

A windows repair did fix it however.

Hey, thanks for you help. Sorry for being stupid, but how exactly do I get a windows repair? Or does this mean completely reinstalling windows?

It's a part install, it repairs the core files without messing with your data and customization.

You will need a Windows CD.

1) Run a full set of spyware and virus scans. <-- I have seen many instances of malware being the culprit of this.

2) Do system maintenance including chkdsk.

3) This is a rather exhaustive list of "possible" fixes from MS
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798
But the ones I would be most likely to look at is:
Quote:
Reregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services

To register .dll files that are associated with Cryptographic Services, follow these steps: 1.Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then OK.2.At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after each command:regsvr32 /u softpub.dll
regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u mssip32.dll
regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll
exit
Note Click OK if you are prompted.

Note Microsoft Windows 2000 does not include the Sccbase.dll file. If you are running a version of Windows 2000, omit the Sccbase.dll file.3.Restart your computer.4.Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.5.At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after each command:regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
exit
Note Click OK if you are prompted.

Note Microsoft Windows 2000 does not include the Sccbase.dll file. If you are running a version of Windows 2000, omit the Sccbase.dll file.

6.Restart the computer.
