Default Windows XP HD Detection problems

Ok, hi!

Recently my hard disks developed some faults and broke down. I purchased myself a new set of Maxtor DiamondMax 21 SATA drives with the intention of using them in a striped RAID.

My previous drives were also Maxtors and were set in a striped RAID. So I thought I wouldn't have too many problems.

Ok relevant technical gubbins:
Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
Old HDs: 2 x 250Gig Maxtor DiamondMax 10
New HDs: 2 x 250Gig Maxtor DiamondMax 21
OS: Windows XP Home edition
I don't have a floppy drive (oops) but can purchase one. I'm using my laptop atm, which doesn't have a floppy drive. So getting a BIOS onto a floppy could be awkward, but not impossible.

The problem is that when I attempt to install Windows Home it starts and then claims that it can't detect my HDs. The BIOS seems to detect both drives, they're listed during boot up and the RAID setup can detect them fine. But I can't proceed any further in the XP install.

Do I need an updated BIOS? Can anyone point me in the right direction (to download the right BIOS) or tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

You need to make a SATA driver disk using your motherboard CD.

Then when you install XP by booting from the XP CD it will ask you near the start to press F6 to install drivers or something, put the disk in and away you go.

SATA drives need drivers, ATA do not.

if you installing a SATA and putting a OS on it, you need the drivers on a floppy drive. if your just adding it on, right click on the my computer icon in the start button and select mange. then go to disk management, and you will find your hard drive. you need to format it. right click on the drive in there and select format.

I thought it might be this. Thanks.

I've mislaid the motherboard CD in a recent move. Does anyone know where I might find a link for the driver online? I've tried the ASUS site with little luck as I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for.
