Hi,

My boyfriend recently bought a reconditioned laptop that wasn't running Windows at all, but is licenced for XP Pro.

He tried loading an XP Home disc but it wouldn't take the key code (not surprisingly, I suppose). He now has an XP Pro disc but the laptop is halfway through loading Home and he can't seem to get out of it.

How does he delete what's already loaded and start afresh?

Thanks

Sarah

I'd just turn it off and on again, as you can't do ctrl+alt+del, as its installing the OS.

It won't harm the PC doing this.

Hi and welcome to the forums, you will need to boot from the CD as he must have with the other version, then all you have to do is follow the instructions and select format to completely blank the harddive, then just continue installing the OS

Sorry, when can I select format to blank the harddrive? When I put the Home cd in it asks for the keycode, but won't take the Pro code. If I put the Pro cd it, its not recognising it.

The problem is that I can't 'go into' anything. It's not fully loaded xp home and I can't get out of it.

Turn it off by holding off button.
Insert XP Pro disc
Turn it back on, it should boot up without loading an OS, as there isn't one to load, and you will be presented with Command Prompt, which will be loaded from the disk.
Type in "format C: /s" (without quotes)

When I turn it on (even with the pro disc in) its showing home edition page, then a 'Fatal Error' window, then closes down and restarts.

When you restart does it ask you to press any key to boot from CD? If so than you should, if not you will have to go into the Bios and change the boot order...To get into te bios you will need to press F8 repeatidly when you turn it on, then you will have to set the boot order to CD,

OK, I've turned it on, pressed f8 and I'm into Windows Advanced Options Menu. Whatever option I choose, it then wants me to choose which os to start, but the only option it gives me is XP Home.
