Ok. I've got into a bit of a mess with my Dell Laptop. I bought it about 2 years ago and over the years it has become so clogged up and virus ridden that i decided it needed to be wiped. I found out that by reinstalling the operating system, the computer gets wiped and you start a fresh. So i did this, i entered in the product code, selected 'new install' rather than 'upgrade'. I went through a lengthy process. When it was done, i restarted my PC, and on a black screen, it gave me the choice of Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Home (there were two of them). So i just pressed enter, and i got to my new desktop. It seemed to have worked, but after looking in local disc c, it hadnt. Everything was there but i could not access it as i was no longer 'ADRIAN' as was my computer name before. On restarting the PC, i tried loading up the other XP option, but it wouldnt let me. So it seems now i have a fairly messed up computer. I just want to reinstall windows, have only one operating system with all the old stuff wiped, so it can be like new again. How do i do this and sort out the dilema i am in?

(if i need to reinstall windows i need instructions, i have no idea what im doing!) thanks.

You did an install over the top of the bad install.

When going through setup do the fresh install and not the repair also do the the full format instead of the quick format.

hi. It never asked me about 'format' it takes me to a black screen where it asks about partions etc. there is FAT and NTSC. Also, im sure i selected 'fresh install' and not repair.

It gave you a list of partitions to install to. You need to delete them all and then create a new one to install to.

I thought so too, but it would not let me delete the NTFS one because it says stuff are on it that are needed for the installation, or something like tht .
