Oh dear - I seem to have started something here.

I have confirmed with the vendor of my laptop CD that it is Windows XP OEM disc. I have used it on the laptop, registered and validated it and receive the necessary updates from Microsoft so that one is tickety-boo.

PC - don't have a disk as previously stated and the little sticker on the side of the tower says that I have Windows XP Home OEM software and has the key typed on it too.

Laptop is Fujitsu
PC is Packard Bell

There are a lot of variables here, the key on the desktop would need to be a valid full key that matches the type of key the laptop CD is, for instance XP pro OEM key. If they match up then the install would be authentic and updates would go off without a hitch. A lot of "ifs" but worth a try to save some money.
There is only one type ardvark, ie;

abcde-12345-fghij-67890-klmno

They won't match.

You are not reading the entire thread mate re-read it!

I can't keep typing hAvAAck when it's easier to type ardvark. :)

Get an OEM XP disk from Packard Bell Yvonne, insist on it because it sounds to me like you don't even have a recovery disk never mind a reinstall disk.

If the laptop is running XP home and not XP pro, then the CD will work with the desktop key because they would be the same version and type of XP (home, OEM)
I agree with Wolfeymole though, get them to send you a CD if you can.
They keys aren't tied directly to the physical CDs, Wolf, they are tied to the type and version of the OS CD
