Default Windows XP loading prob

Hey there,

Earlier I turned my PC on and it was loading up, when it got to the screen that says windows XP and has the moving loading bar underneath the logo, just before you pick your profile, the loading bar stopped and nothing happened. I pressed the reset button (the CPU light on the front was off and there seemed to be no activity at all) and loaded up DOS (or whatever it is!) and gave me a few options for safe mode or normal windows. Whenever I went to normal windows it crashed again in the same place, so I loaded it in safe made and ran a virus check (only thing I could think of) but everything was fine so I shut down and left it for 10-15mins and tried again. This time it loaded fine and there were no probs. Any idea what caused this?

Cheers

Kris

Have you added any software or installed any new drivers before the reboot?

Those are the most likely causes, windows does mess about fairly commonly, it's its OK now I wouldn't worry too much mate.

Hi shroomo

The window you describe is Windows loading showing its progress bar "as Dave said Windows does mess about " but I'm just wondering how many applications do you have running at start up ? i have seen PCs with as many as 70+ and Windows struggling to cope, its always a good idea to uninstall any programs you don't use any more or if you think you may want to use them some day stop them from loading at start, via (msconfig or services.msc)

I only got the computer recently and I've only really installed a few games, I havn't told it to start any programs on start-up. Apart from programs i've already installed i'd be a bit worried about stopping/deleting anything else (windows related) in case it's important! As I say I only got it recently and is definately not littered with unused or forgotten programs or files.

Is this what you were getting at Maria, or did I not get it?! It's quite common for me!

Thanks either way!

Kris

Well... I never liked Microsoft anyway (shhhhh!). But when compared to Apple I guess there not much choice! If only Sony made a version!

I always go in and turn off those needless startup programs. Microsoft is such a hassle with them.
