my desktop os opens but when I try to open anything I end up with a black screen with the hour glass in the middle of that screen and thats it

Can you give us a little more information, please?

What operating system? How long has this been going on? Have you made any recent hardware/software changes? Can you boot into Safe Mode? Have you tried to perform a System Restore? What, if any, attempts have you made at trying to correct this issue?

The OS is Windows XP Pro. This problem seems to have start when my nephew downloaded Limewire? I'm not sure I'm just guessing that when the problems started. Or maybe something else he downloaded. I have not added any hardware/software as of late. I was able to boot into Safe Mode. Where I hopefully removed Limewire and a few other programs my nephew downloaded. My system is comprised of an ASUS A7A266 mobo Rev.1.10 Gainwald GLE Video card, AvanceLogic Inc. ALS 4000 sound card, I'm not positive of the CPU. I just rebooted by pushing the power button for the first time in a while. However, the problem still exists, programs just won't open.

Have you tried restoring back to an earlier date, maybe a week before the problem began?

No but I will try if I can bootup in Safe Mode and I'll let you know
