| Hi folks, hope someone can help me here. I have XP pro on my laptop and cannot logon to windows when I start up. I get a message saying that my username and password have not been recognised. I've been advised that the only solution is a new hard drive and/or motherboard. I'm certain that what caused the problem was my own curiosity! I was poking around trying to figure out how everything works, went into my computer properties, computer name. Not 100% certain what my options were after that but I think it was rename (or something simlar). I clicked next a couple of times and event though I hit the back button before confirming I got a message to say settings would take place next time the laptop was restarted - and they did!! It looks to me (an obviously not as PC savvy plonker as I thought) that I have renamed the computer. I didn't type in any details when I was messing so perhaps there's a default username and password it it changes to? I really need help here as this is a works laptop and although I'd just claim ignorance and say it just happened all by itself it wouls be so much better if I could fix it. As it stands the laptop is unusable as all I get when I switch on is the screen wanting me to logon which I can't get past.Hope someone has the answer. Sam |

done some digging basciaally if no succcess you'll have to re-install, if you haven't made a password reset disk microsoft may have a way around it tho probably worth ringing them first |

| Some very simple instructions you can try.
No need to buy a new motherboard or hard drive. If you can't log on as Administrator then your work have probably changed the password. It is probably best just to let them sort it out for you.

| Oh well, that didn't work. Even starting up in safe mode it was looking for a username and password. I tried putting the drive on a caddy but I could only access one partition and see the other two but couldn't get in to them. Managed to save a little info and reformatted. Thanks for the help. Sam |

| Thats a shame that you had to reformat. If I had seen your reply earlier I would have given you the links to some tools that can reset the administrator password. Oh well.
