I've always used pre SP# discs with a SP install and enver had issues.
Another thing you could try (which I've just remembered) is
Active Partition Recovery which can sometimes (read rarely) restore the MBR to what it was previously... and when it can't, it can at least put a standard MBR into place. Saved my ass once before, so I'd say give it a try...
Though note that after I did that a lot of files were no longer found to be correct on the disc and thus moved to some hidden/system folders called FOUND.000 or something... The way to see if that will happen or not is to scan the drive for partitions... It seems that the one it finds is more or less what you will get with the standard MBR.
